Proc. of the Fourth Brazilian Symp. on Mathematical and Computational Biology vol.2

First International Symposium on Mathematical and Computational Biology

Rubem Mondaini (editor)

The 4th Brazilian Symposium on Mathematical and Computational Biology - BIOMAT IV - was the first one to be held at an academic institution outside the southeast region in Brazil. These conferences were created with a fully international aspect, since they always had the collaboration of an International Editorial Board. Every year, we register an increasing number of participants from abroad. In spite of this, we have decided to add the title of 1st International Symposium on Mathematical and Computational Biology for the benefit of those which do not know enough about the scientific activities of past symposia and their organization. The words of Prof. Raymond Mejía - Soc. Math. Biol. Newsletter - which was one of the Keynote Speakers of the BIOMAT IV Symposium are of unquestionable value at characterizing the scientific scenario of the conference.

(...) BIOMAT IV, held Nov. 27 – Dec. 1, 2004 at Universidade Estadual de Santa Cruz (UESC http://www.uesc.br/), Ilhéus, Bahia, consisted of tutorials as well as invited, contributed and poster presentations. The symposia are organized by the BIOMAT (http://www.biomat.org/) consortium.

Tutorials included: Introduction to Mathematical Modeling Techniques in Biology (R. Bassanezi, UNICAMP), Pattern Recognition Techniques Applied to Genome Projects (D. Frias, UESC), Introductory Lectures on Quantum Information (R. Muradian, UESC) and Introduction to Protein Physics (R. Mondaini, UFRJ).

Over 150 students and researchers from South America, Europe, Australia, Asia and North America participated in lively and congenial discussions at an excellent venue. (...)

(...) Contributed and poster presentations were in many areas of mathematical and computational biology (see http://www.biomat.org/biomat4/programme.html). Proceedings of past symposia are available at: http://www.biomat.org/biomat/index.html.

We also hope that this publication will contribute for the motivation of young researchers. It will be worthwhile to spend the most productive part of their scientific careers at solving problems of these interdisciplinary subjects.
